How do different types of cartilage function in the body?

I know there are several types of cartilage-like hyaline, fibrocartilage, and elastic cartilage-but I’m not clear on how they differ or what roles they play in the body. Can someone explain the main functions and locations of each type, and why the body needs different kinds of cartilage?

Hyaline cartilage is the most common and covers the ends of bones in joints. It’s smooth and helps reduce friction. Fibrocartilage is tougher and found in places like intervertebral discs and the meniscus.

Elastic cartilage is found in places that need to be flexible, like the ear and epiglottis. Each type is adapted for its specific function-support, flexibility, or shock absorption.

Cartilage doesn’t heal well because it doesn’t have its own blood supply. That’s why injuries to cartilage, especially in the knee, can be so hard to recover from.
