How do muscle fibers differ between endurance and strength athletes?
I’ve noticed that marathon runners and bodybuilders look really different in terms of muscle size and definition. Is this just because of how they train, or are there actual differences in their muscle fibers? How do slow-twitch and fast-twitch fibers play into this, and can training really change your muscle fiber composition? Would love to hear from anyone who’s studied this or has personal experience!

Endurance athletes have more slow-twitch fibers, which are great for long, steady activity and don’t tire quickly. Strength athletes have more fast-twitch fibers, which are better for explosive power but fatigue faster.

You can’t completely change your fiber type with training, but you can improve the efficiency of the fibers you have. Genetics play a big role, but marathoners and sprinters train their muscles for different demands.

I read that slow-twitch fibers use oxygen more efficiently, so they’re good for distance running. Fast-twitch fibers are bigger and stronger, which is why powerlifters and sprinters look more muscular.
