How do the nasal conchae aid in respiration and olfaction?
I came across the term “nasal conchae” in my anatomy book, and I’m curious about their function. How do these structures help with breathing and sense of smell? Are there any conditions that affect the nasal conchae and impact respiration or olfaction?

The nasal conchae are curved bones inside your nose that help warm and humidify the air you breathe. They also create turbulence, which helps trap particles and direct air to the olfactory region.

By increasing the surface area inside the nose, the conchae help with both smelling and filtering air. That’s why breathing through your nose feels different than breathing through your mouth.

If the conchae are swollen (like with allergies), it can make breathing harder and reduce your sense of smell.
