How do the vocal cords produce different pitches and tones?
I’m fascinated by how we can change our voices to sing or speak in different pitches. How do the vocal cords actually produce these variations in sound? What anatomical changes happen when you go from a low note to a high note, and how do things like tension and airflow come into play?

Pitch changes when the vocal cords get tighter or looser. Tight, thin cords vibrate faster and make higher sounds, while relaxed, thicker cords vibrate slower for lower sounds.

Airflow from the lungs makes the cords vibrate. The shape of your throat and mouth also affects the tone and quality of your voice.

Singers train to control their vocal cords and the muscles around them to hit different notes. It takes a lot of practice and breath control!
