How does the anatomy of the ear help with balance and orientation?

I know the ear isn’t just for hearing, but also plays a big role in balance. What are the specific anatomical structures in the ear that help us stay upright and oriented? How do they work together, and what happens if something goes wrong in this system?

The inner ear has semicircular canals filled with fluid. When you move your head, the fluid moves and bends tiny hair cells, which send signals to your brain about your position.

There are also otolith organs that detect gravity and linear movement. Together, these systems help you keep your balance and know which way is up.

If something goes wrong in the inner ear, like an infection or crystals getting loose, you can get vertigo or dizziness.
