How does the anatomy of the foot support bipedal walking?

Humans are pretty unique in our ability to walk upright on two feet. What is it about the anatomy of the foot-bones, arches, muscles, etc.-that makes bipedal walking possible? How do these structures work together, and what problems can arise if something is off?

The arches in the foot act like springs, absorbing shock and helping with balance. The arrangement of bones and ligaments makes walking and running more efficient.

Our big toe is aligned with the other toes and helps push off with each step. Other primates have more spread-out toes for grasping, but ours are built for stability.

If you have flat feet or high arches, it can affect how you walk and sometimes lead to pain or injury. Good shoes can make a big difference!
