What are the anatomical reasons behind hernias forming?
I’ve heard of people getting hernias, especially in the abdomen or groin, but what actually causes them from an anatomical perspective? Are there certain weak points in the body where hernias are more likely to occur? How does the structure of muscles and connective tissue contribute to hernia risk?

Hernias usually happen where there’s a natural weakness or opening in the muscle wall, like the groin (inguinal canal) or belly button. If the muscle gets stretched or weakened, tissue can push through.

Heavy lifting, obesity, or chronic coughing can increase pressure and make hernias more likely. Some people are just born with weaker spots in their abdominal wall.

I had an inguinal hernia repaired last year. The surgeon said it’s one of the most common surgeries because those areas are naturally prone to weakness.
