What are the most common anatomical variations in the human body?

I’ve heard that not everyone’s anatomy is exactly the same, and that there are lots of “normal” variations in things like blood vessels, muscles, or even bones. What are some of the most common anatomical variations that doctors or surgeons encounter? Do these variations ever cause problems, or are they usually just interesting quirks? Anyone have stories from med school or clinical practice?

Stuff like extra ribs, missing muscles (like the palmaris longus), or variations in arteries are pretty common. Most don’t cause problems unless you’re having surgery or an injury exposes them.

I’ve seen people with an extra tendon in their wrist or different branching patterns of blood vessels. Even things like the number of lumbar vertebrae can vary. Surgeons have to watch out for these!

Some people have a third nipple, extra bones in the feet (accessory bones), or double ureters. Most of these are harmless, but they can surprise you if you’re not expecting them.
