What are the most common congenital heart defects anatomically?

I’m interested in pediatric anatomy and keep hearing about congenital heart defects. What are the most common types from an anatomical perspective, and how do they affect the structure and function of the heart? How are these defects usually detected and treated?

Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is probably the most common-it’s a hole between the heart’s lower chambers. There’s also atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA).

Tetralogy of Fallot is a more complex defect but still relatively common. Most of these are detected early in life with ultrasounds or after birth if the baby has symptoms.

Treatment depends on the defect-some close on their own, while others need surgery. Advances in pediatric cardiology have made outcomes much better than they used to be.
