What’s the function of the meniscus in the knee joint?

I’ve heard of athletes tearing their meniscus, but I’m not totally sure what it does. What is the meniscus, where is it located in the knee, and what role does it play in movement and stability? What happens if you lose part or all of your meniscus?

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage that cushions and stabilizes the knee. It helps distribute weight and absorb shock when you walk or run.

If you tear your meniscus, the knee can become painful, swollen, or unstable. Sometimes it heals on its own, but often it needs surgery.

I tore my meniscus playing basketball. The doctor said it’s common in athletes because twisting motions can easily damage it.
