What’s the significance of the Circle of Willis in the brain?
I keep coming across the term “Circle of Willis” in my neuroanatomy readings. Why is this structure so important? What does it do, and what happens if there’s a problem or variation in the Circle of Willis? Are there any clinical conditions specifically related to this part of the brain’s blood supply?

The Circle of Willis is a ring of arteries at the base of the brain. It acts as a backup system-if one artery gets blocked, blood can still reach the brain through other routes.

Not everyone has a “complete” Circle of Willis, and variations can affect stroke risk. It’s a really important area for neurosurgeons to know about.

Aneurysms often develop in the Circle of Willis, which can be dangerous if they rupture. That’s why it’s a focus in brain imaging and stroke research.
