Why are clavicle fractures so common compared to other bones?
It seems like broken collarbones are a pretty common injury, especially in sports or accidents. Is there something about the anatomy of the clavicle that makes it more likely to break? How does its shape, location, or function contribute to this, and are there any ways to protect against clavicle fractures?

The clavicle is pretty exposed and acts as a strut between the shoulder and sternum. It takes the brunt of falls or impacts, especially if you land on your shoulder or outstretched arm.

It’s also one of the first bones to ossify in development, but it’s relatively thin and has a slight S-shape, making it more prone to breaking.

I broke my collarbone in a bike accident. The doctor said it’s one of the most common fractures, especially in kids and athletes. Luckily, it usually heals well with just a sling.
