Why do some people have double-jointed thumbs or fingers?

Some of my friends can bend their thumbs or fingers way back, almost like they’re double-jointed. What’s the anatomical explanation for this? Is it just about joint structure, or are there differences in ligaments or tendons? Are there any risks or benefits to being double-jointed?

“Double-jointed” people usually have more flexible ligaments, which let their joints move beyond the normal range. It’s called hypermobility and is mostly genetic.

It’s not really an extra joint, just looser connective tissue. Some people can do cool tricks with their fingers, but it can also make them more prone to sprains or dislocations.

I can bend my thumb way back and my doctor said it’s harmless as long as it doesn’t hurt. Some people with hypermobility do need to be careful with joint injuries, though.
