Why do some people have more flexible joints than others?

Some people seem to be naturally super flexible, able to do splits or bend their fingers in unusual ways. What’s the anatomical basis for this increased flexibility? Is it just genetics, or are there differences in things like connective tissue or joint structure? Are there any downsides to being hypermobile?

Some people have more elastic connective tissue, which makes their joints more flexible. This is often genetic and is called hypermobility. It’s common in dancers and gymnasts.

Hypermobility can be a double-edged sword. It’s great for flexibility, but it can also lead to joint pain or injuries if you’re not careful. Some people have conditions like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome that make them extra flexible.

I’m super flexible and my doctor said it’s just the way my collagen is structured. It doesn’t cause me any problems, but I have to be careful not to overextend my joints.
