Why do some people have more pronounced Adam’s apples?

Some people have really noticeable Adam’s apples, while others barely have one. What determines the size and visibility of the Adam’s apple anatomically? Is it just related to gender and hormones, or are there other factors involved? Does it serve any function?

The Adam’s apple is just the thyroid cartilage around the larynx. It gets bigger during puberty, especially in males, because of testosterone. That’s why men usually have more prominent Adam’s apples.

Some women have noticeable Adam’s apples too, it just depends on genetics and how much the cartilage grows. It doesn’t really serve a function besides protecting the vocal cords.

Mine sticks out a lot and I used to be self-conscious, but it’s totally normal. It’s just part of how our voices deepen during puberty.
