Why is the sciatic nerve so susceptible to compression?

I’ve had sciatica on and off for years and my doctor says it’s because the sciatic nerve is easily compressed. Why is this nerve in particular so prone to getting pinched or irritated? Is it just because of its size and location, or are there other anatomical reasons? Also, what are the most common causes of sciatic nerve compression, and are there ways to prevent it?

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and runs through some tight spaces in the pelvis and buttocks. If muscles like the piriformis get tight or you have a herniated disc, it’s easy for the nerve to get pinched.

I’ve had sciatica from a slipped disc, and my doctor said it’s because the nerve passes right by the spine and through the glutes. Any inflammation or swelling in that area can press on it and cause pain down the leg.

It’s also a long nerve, so there are more places where things can go wrong. Sitting for long periods or heavy lifting can irritate it, especially if you already have tight muscles or spinal issues.
