Why is the spleen so vulnerable to injury during trauma?
I’ve heard that the spleen is one of the organs most likely to be injured in accidents or sports. Why is the spleen so susceptible to trauma? Is it because of its location, size, or something about its structure? What are the typical consequences of a spleen injury, and how are they treated?

The spleen is right under the left rib cage and isn’t very well protected. It’s soft and full of blood, so a direct hit can cause it to rupture and bleed a lot.

In car accidents or sports injuries, the spleen can be damaged easily. That’s why doctors check for left upper abdominal pain after trauma.

If the spleen ruptures, it’s a medical emergency because of the risk of internal bleeding. Sometimes it has to be removed, but you can live without it.
